No 1 Labourers Camp, Westlake Capitol Hill 1924. The camp was established on Capitol Hill (in the area later covered by Hillside Hostel) in 1923. The area was at that time part of Westlake. The photograph shows the Cooks' tents. The Mess Caterer was Herbert Daniel and often the camp was known as Daniel's No 1. The camp was moved in late 1927. There were a number of deaths in this camp. Two men (from memory) died when a candle fell over and set their tent on fire. There was also the death of a man named Miley who was injured during a drunken brawl. This happened in either late 1926 or early 1927. A search via Trove will give the details. Ann Gugler
